Black Myth Wukong Guide FAQ: Answering the Most Common Questions
So how hard is Black Myth Wukong honestly? Somewhere between God of War 2018 and Sekiro I'd say. It's not a pure Soulslike. No death penalty. No corpse runs. You can pause anytime. But the bosses hit hard and some move sets will take 20 plus attempts if you're stubborn about not engaging with the mechanics and just keep trying to brute force everything with light attacks like it's a Dynasty Warriors game, which it is definitely not.
I've found the difficulty really spikes in Chapter 2 where the Yellow Wind Sage can absolutely wreck you if you skipped the Wind Tamer vessel and went in blind thinking you could just dodge through the tornado phase without any counter item whatsoever. And Chapter 4 with the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master is brutal too, that golden phase where he just sits there immune to everything while you waste all your mana and gourd charges wondering what the hell you're supposed to do. Chapter 1 is basically a tutorial in disguise tbh. Chapter 6 is surprisingly forgiving if you've been collecting everything along the way and didn't rush through the earlier chapters skipping every side path.
If you've beaten Elden Ring or Lies of P you'll be fine. If this is your first action RPG start with Immobilize and Pluck of Many. Those two spells carry hard. Not even close.
Chapter 1 stuff that actually helps. The Whiteclad Noble in the Bamboo Grove is the first real wall for most people, the point where the game stops holding your hand and starts checking if you've actually been paying attention to the combat tutorials it spent the last hour walking you through with all those shrine guards and wandering enemies. Two things consistently work here: stay in his face during phase 1 since his ranged water attacks are a nightmare to dodge, and save your Transformation for phase 2 when he starts mixing up his combos and throwing out attacks that track your roll direction. That's really it.
Guangzhi's transformation is hidden off a side path near the Wolf Forest shrine. Look for a wooden gate you can break with a charged heavy. Get this before fighting Lingxuzi the giant wolf boss. Guangzhi's fire damage just chunks his health bar. Completely shreds it.
So the Chapter 1 bosses in order. Bullguard needs nothing special, just dodge forward not backward. Guangzhi you definately want to grab before Lingxuzi cause the fire transformation melts the wolf boss. For Lingxuzi itself stay under his belly and wail on him. Whiteclad Noble you want Immobilize plus the Red Tides spirit and save your transform for phase two. Black Wind King is all about Cloud Step and dodging the whirlwind not the boss himself, a lot of people panic dodge the boss when the real threat is the AOE wind that follows him around the arena in a pattern that's honestly pretty predictable once you've seen it twice. Black Bear Guai you need the Fireproof Mantle beforehand and use it during his fire AOE phase, then he's a joke.
And that Fireproof Mantle. Most people miss this on their first run honestly, they blaze through Chapter 1 killing bosses and never stop to look around at the side areas that the level design is hinting at but never forcing you to explore. After beating Black Wind King but before the Black Bear Guai, backtrack to the Grand Chamber shrine where you'll find the first of three bells scattered across Chapter 1. One near Guangzhi. One near Guangmou in the snake area. One near the Whiteclad Noble arena. Ring all three and you get teleported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple where Elder Jinchi drops the Fireproof Mantle. This trivializes the entire chapter boss.
Don't spread your Sparks thin. Immobilize first and max it, it's your panic button and fully upgraded it freezes bosses long enough for a full light combo plus a charged heavy which on some bosses is literally half their health bar gone in one rotation. Smash Stance Resolute Counterflow is the parry mechanic with tight timing that interrupts boss combos and does massive stagger damage when you land it consistently, which takes practice. Cloud Step Galeforce does absurd damage with the charged unveiling strike and repositions you behind the boss for a free backstab window. Pluck of Many unlocks in Chapter 3 and when you pair multiple clones with Immobilize it's basically a delete button for most mini-bosses. Transformation Ebon Flow for the second transform slot is worth more than any stat upgrade honestly.
Skip the stamina tree entirely until Chapter 4. Base stamina regen is fast enough and the nodes give tiny returns. I didn't upgrade stamina once on my first playthrough and never felt gated by it. Kinda wonder why they even put that tree in the game.
But the real reason to find secret areas isn't just completionism or getting achievements for some platinum trophy that nobody's gonna check. It's the secret ending. You cannot get the true ending without doing all of them. All of them, every single one.
Chapter 1 has the Ancient Guanyin Temple from the three bells, gives the Fireproof Mantle. Chapter 2 the Kingdom of Sahali from helping the Boar NPC near Fright Cliff, you get the Wind Tamer vessel which disables Yellow Wind Sage's tornado phase completely. Chapter 3 Mount Mei from completing Chen Loong's quest chain across multiple chapters, unlocks Zodiac Village which is a permanent upgrade hub. Chapter 4 Purple Cloud Mountain from the Venom Daoist quest at the Pool of Shattered Jade, gives the Weaver's Needle vessel that counters Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master's golden phase and without it the fight is basically a 20 minute war of attrition. Chapter 5 Bishui Cave by breaking the ice wall near Cooling Slope with the fire transformation, get the Plantain Fan vessel which is essential for the chapter boss. Chapter 6 Water Curtain Cave, beat the Stone Monkey after collecting all secret items for the true final boss.
And the quest chains are missable. If you beat the chapter boss before doing the secret area some NPCs just disappear from the game world permenantly and there's no way to get them back short of starting NG plus or loading an old save if you happened to make one. And Chapter 4 specifically don't fight the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master until you've been to Purple Cloud Mountain. The Weaver's Needle makes the fight go from unfair to manageable, night and day difference.
So three things for the secret ending. Beat every secret area boss from chapters 1 through 5 without missing any. Complete the Treasure Hunter quest in Chapter 3 finding all six Buddha eyes hidden in the most random locations. After beating the Stone Monkey but before starting NG plus go interact with the Great Sage's Shell at the peak of Mount Huaguo.
The game has no quest log. The Treasure Hunter quest alone involves finding six glowing eyes embedded in cliff faces across the entire Valley of Ecstasy. No map markers. No hints. I used a guide and it still took 40 minutes. Not sure if there's a way to track them in game but I couldn't find one...
But not every spark or medicine actually matters. And the Loong Scales in Chapter 2, break the waterfall wall in Sandgate Village with a charged heavy, and it unlocks four hidden Loong boss fights that drop the best crafting materials in the game. The Buddha Eyes in Chapter 3 for the secret ending. All Celestial Pills spread across every chapter for permanent stat boosts with no downside whatsoever. That's the must get stuff.
Meditation spots give Sparks but there's enough from bosses to max what you need. Soaks are minor drink buffs. Seeds only matter if you care about the achievement. All nice but totally skippable.
And the Loong boss fights are the best content most players miss. Red Loong in Chapter 1, Black Loong in Chapter 2, Cyan Loong in Chapter 3, Yellow Loong in Chapter 4. But Yellow Loong is arguably harder than the final boss tbh.
For a first playthrough playing safe just max Immobilize, use Smash Stance, equip the Wandering Wight spirit early since it's in the Chapter 1 forest and you just dodge the charge attack for a one shot spirit skill that chunks bosses, stack defense curios. Pluck of Many plus Immobilize combo kills most bosses before they can react. It's kinda broken.
For NG plus playing aggressive go Thrust Stance with the Tactical Retreat nodes. Spell Binder drops in Chapter 4 and disables all spells but nearly doubles your attack power which is a fair trade when you already know all the boss patterns. Pair with crit curios and the Non Able spirit for pure melee. Bosses melt but you can't panic Immobilize anymore which is terrifying.
For specific bosses. Yellow Wind Sage the Wind Tamer vessel is mandatory not optional, do not fight him without it. Yellow Brow in Chapter 3 use Spell Binder or Ring of Fire cause he drains your mana if you use any spells against him. Hundred Eyed Daoist Master the Weaver's Needle removes his invincibility phase. Erlang Shen the Plantain Fan plain and simple disables his shield phase and without it he's probably the hardest boss in the entire game.
The game rewards preparation over raw reflexes. Most of the this boss is impossible complaints I've seen on Chinese forums like Bilibili and Tieba get solved by the right vessel or a build respec that takes 30 seconds at any shrine. Thirty seconds. That's it. The difference between a rage quit and a first try kill is often just equipping the right item that the game already gave you two chapters ago.
